I used to stay here with my family 20 years ago, and have many fond memories of the Texan. The current owners, however, have turned what was once the best cabin resort in town into a complete dump.
In short: STAY AWAY, unless you want your vacation experience ruined. There are much higher quality - not to mention cheaper - places to stay in Lake City.
Very nice accommodations! Very spacious and nice locations. A few things to take note of most of the windows lack screens which is not much of an issue until night time due to moths and mosquitos terrorize you. One of the bathrooms have a shower/bath combo and is private. while the master bedroom area has a bath only with no privacy from anyone else upstairs. Comfortable leather couches and dsl internet along with dish TV.
The upstairs deck had a hole in the floor and the railing was loose.
(EDIT: It should be noted that the 5-star reviews from Shane Barksdale here on Google are a clear conflict of interest, as he is the co-manager at the Texan. Shane, if you don't like the bad reviews, do a better job. Better yet, sell the Texan altogether.)
Beware!!! Rooms are not clean, not sure if they had be cleaned in some time. There was dog hair everywhere and all the bed sheets were dirty. Kitchen utensils were old, and broke easily. We had an old washing machine on our back porch. I had a friend warn me not to stay there He complained that it was dirty a year ago when they stayed. I called the owner and confronted him about the cleanliness when I made reservations. He gave me several excuses why it was not clean and assured me that it had been taken care of. You would think he would have made sure it was clean after confronting him. He also said he would upgrade us for telling him about my friend that was unhappy a year ago. He lied because there were several empty cabins by the riverside. The grounds were not taken care of and trashy. This place has a very bad reputation in Lake City and we will never stay here again
The grounds of the resort are unkept and the view from our deck across the river was junk. This could be a beautiful place if it was managed better. We booked our cabin for 8 nights and on the 7th day I received a text basically kicking us out of our cabin. I had to leave our family activity up the mountain to return to office to discuss matter with the owner. Before I reminded him of the 8 nights we had paid for he threatened to call the Sheriff to remove us?! Our family have rented nice homes in the Ouray area for a fraction of what we paid for this. Beware......There is a reason they show no current interior pics of the cabins. We stayed in #38.
You couldn't pay me to stay at the Texan now, which is a shame. The best thing that could happen would be for somebody who actually cares about the property to take ownership. The current owner clearly does not.
We had such a lovely time in Lake City! Our cabin was beautiful and the staff was very accommodating. We stayed two nights. We cruised the various passes and fished the many lakes nearby. We also fished the river on the property. The scenery is amazing! We even caught a glimpse of a moose! We were very comfortable in our cabin. We shall return.
Read the reviews below for some horror stories about unsuspecting folks having their reservations swapped out, filthy cabin interiors, and unpleasant confrontations with the owner, who by all accounts is a real piece of work.
There were 3 hornets nest on the ceiling in the loft and the ants outside on the porch were so bad we could not even enjoy our porch. I asked for something to be done and 24 hours later we took care of the problem ourselves. We had to ask for pans. The first night we arrived we noticed that the towels felt like sandpaper, luckily we had a washer/dryer in our cabin and our own laundry supplies. We washed and dried towels before we used them. We later found out that they line dry the towels.
We stayed in the cabin across the way from the previous reviewer and our experience was horrible. And likewise we complained and I was offered a voucher for next year but there is no way we would ever return. Our cabin was filthy, especially the floors. Our cabin was not prepared for rental. The dishes were dirty, even the ones in the dishwasher looked like they had been there since last year. There was a spider encased in a glass in the dishwasher.
The grounds are spectacularly unkempt, and every square foot of open space has been crammed full of cabins that are in various stages of disrepair. Parking is scarce and the resort, if you can call it that, is extremely crowded.
